Montreal-based sculptor KARIM CHARLEBOIS is responding to the visual overload of the digital world. Too many images, too much stimulus, too fast, too much of everything. He returns to gesture, to wood, to simplicity. Each cut in his sculptures is a trace of human error, a celebration of imperfection. Co-founder of the Field Experiments collective, his work has been shown globally at the Design Museum (UK), Fisher Parish Gallery (USA), and Ventura Lambrate (Italy).This exhibition offers a sweeping look at the trajectory of his work, pairing a rich retrospective of sculptures from recent years alongside an exclusive presentation of new, unreleased pieces. At the conceptual and physical center of the gallery is a live, five-day carving station. Working entirely by hand with gouges and chisels and deliberately avoiding all power tools, Charlebois begins with a raw block of wood on opening day and carves continuously, completing a brand-new, finished sculpture by the close of the final day.
Every intentional cut and accidental slip remains visible, recording the honest passage of physical effort and time. By allowing the resulting wood shavings to accumulate organically on the floor day after day, the gallery transforms into a living landscape of creation.
The artist will be present from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM for the duration of the exhibition.
